Trek Route : Markha valley trek • The Markha River is a river in Ladakh, India. It is a tributary of the Zanskar River and starts at the junction of the Langtang Chu and Nimaling Chu. Villages along the river valley include Skiu Markha, Umlung and Hangkar. The Markha River lies within the Hemis National Park. • The Markha Valley is one of the most popular trekking routes in Ladakh, accessible from Ganda La pass near Spituk in the west, which is usually the beginning point of the trek, and Gongmaru La pass near Hemis, where the trek usually ends. Villages on the route of Markha valley trek are Rumbak, Shingo, Skyu, Sara, Markha and Hankar. • Towards the head of the valley you can find the Kang Yatze, a 6,400-metre-high (21,000 ft) mountain. The Markha River also passes to the south of the Stok range which includes the 6,153-metre-high (20,187 ft) Stok Kangri mountain. • Nomadic families herd their yaks in this valley. Many small monasteries exist, of which Techa gompa is the most important Buddhist monastery in the Markha valley.

As Leh is situated at an altitude of 3,500 meters, this day is reserved for acclimatization to help your body adjust to the high altitude. Complete rest is strongly recommended. After breakfast, spend the day gradually exploring Leh town while continuing acclimatization. Visit key cultural landmarks and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. After an early breakfast, drive to Chilling (approx. 2–3 hours). Chilling is known for its traditional metalwork artisans and serves as the starting point of the trek. From here, begin your trek towards Skiu village. The trail follows the Markha River, passing through beautiful landscapes of barren cliffs, willow groves, and small settlements. The walk is moderate and pleasant, allowing gradual altitude adaptation. Overnight stay in campsite or homestay at Skiu (3,400 m).
After breakfast, begin trekking towards Markha village. The trail gradually ascends along the Markha River, crossing small streams and passing through charming hamlets and fields. You may encounter grazing yaks and traditional Ladakhi houses along the route. The valley opens up with spectacular views of rugged mountains. Upon arrival at Markha village (3,700 m), settle into your campsite or homestay. Overnight stay at Markha.
Today is dedicated to exploration and acclimatization. You can hike towards higher ridges above Markha village, reaching elevations around 4,150 meters. The area offers breathtaking views of Kang Yatse peak and surrounding snow-covered mountains. Visit the ancient monastery ruins and observe traditional village life. This exploration day helps with altitude adjustment while enjoying the beauty of the valley. Return to Markha for overnight stay.
After breakfast, retrace your steps back to Skiu. The descent is gradual and easier, offering a different perspective of the valley’s dramatic landscapes. Enjoy the peaceful surroundings and take time for photography and relaxation. Arrive at Skiu by afternoon and rest at the campsite or homestay. Overnight stay at Skiu.
In the morning, trek back to Chilling following the same scenic route along the Markha River. Upon reaching Chilling, meet your vehicle and drive back to Leh. After check-in at the hotel, the rest of the day is free for relaxation, souvenir shopping, or café visits in Leh market. Overnight stay at hotel in Leh.
After breakfast, transfer to Leh Airport for your onward journey. The tour concludes with unforgettable memories of the Markha Valley’s landscapes, culture, and adventure.
