Overview

The Markha River is a river in Ladakh, India. It is a tributary of the Zanskar River and starts at the junction of the Langtang Chu and Nimaling Chu. Villages along the river valley include Skiu Markha, Umlung and Hangkar. The Markha River lies within the Hemis National Park. The Markha Valley is one of the most popular trekking routes in Ladakh, accessible from Ganda La pass near Spituk in the west, which is usually the beginning point of the trek, and Gongmaru La pass near Hemis, where the trek usually ends. Villages on the route of Markha valley trek are Rumbak, Shingo, Skyu, Sara, Markha and Hankar. Towards the head of the valley you can find the Kang Yatze, a 6,400-metre-high (21,000 ft) mountain. The Markha River also passes to the south of the Stok range which includes the 6,153-metre-high (20,187 ft) Stok Kangri mountain. Nomadic families herd their yaks in this valley. Many small monasteries exist, of which Techa gompa is the most important Buddhist monastery in the Markha valley.

Arrival Leh, Our representative will meet, greet, assist and transfer you to Hotel in Leh. Rest of the day free to acclimatize to the high altitude of Ladakh. In the evening take a walk to the local bazaar in Leh.

Drive: Leh → Alchi → Lamayuru → Back to Leh, Distance: Approx. 220 km round trip, Time: 7–8 hrs including sightseeing, Places Covered: Sangam (Zanskar–Indus confluence), Magnetic Hill, Alchi Monastery (3,100m), Lamayuru Monastery (3,900m), known for “Moonland” landscape, Overnight: Leh

Distance: ~50 km, Altitude Gain: ~400m (Leh: 3,500m → Skiu: 3,400m), Drive Duration: 3 hours, Route: Leh → Hemis → Zingchen → Chilling → Skiu, Terrain: A scenic drive along the Indus and Zanskar rivers, crossing the confluence at Nimmu. The last stretch from Chilling to Skiu follows a narrow valley road along the Markha River. Overnight: Camp at Skiu (3,400m)

Distance: 20 km, Altitude Gain: 300m (Skiu: 3,400m → Markha: 3,700m), Trek Duration: 7 hours, Terrain: A gentle ascent along the Markha River, crossing small streams. The route passes through villages like Sara and Chaluk, with glimpses of mani walls, chortens, and traditional Ladakhi houses. Highlights: The first long walking day with moderate elevation gain. The Markha village offers a beautiful setting with irrigated fields and a small monastery. Overnight: Camp at Markha (3,700m)

Distance: 13 km, Altitude Gain: 450m (Markha: 3,700m → Thachungtse: 4,150m), Trek Duration: 8 hours, Terrain: A mix of gradual ascents and river crossings. The trail passes through the village of Hankar, the highest settlement in Markha Valley, before a steeper climb towards Thachungtse. Highlights: Views of Kang Yatse (6,400m) become more prominent. The landscape transitions from green valley terrain to a more alpine environment. Overnight: Camp at Thachungtse (4,150m)

Distance: 10 km, Altitude Gain: 570m (Thachungtse: 4,150m → Nimaling: 4,720m), Trek Duration: 6-7 hours, Terrain: A steady climb through high-altitude meadows, crossing small streams and boulder-strewn paths. The air is thinner, and the environment becomes more rugged. Highlights: Nimaling is a high-altitude grazing ground with yaks and pashmina goats. Stunning views of Kang Yatse dominate the landscape. Overnight: Camp at Nimaling (4,720m)

Distance: 17 km trek + 40 km drive, Altitude Gain/Loss: Ascent: +540m (Nimaling: 4,720m → Kongmaru La: 5,260m) | Descent: -1,560m (Kongmaru La: 5,260m → Shang Sumdo: 3,700m), Trek Duration: 8 hours, Drive Duration: 1.5 hours, Terrain: A steep climb to Kongmaru La, the highest point of the trek, with incredible views of the Zanskar and Ladakh ranges. The descent is steep and leads into a narrow gorge with dramatic rock formations. Highlights: The summit of Kongmaru La offers breathtaking panoramas. The descent through the red-hued canyons is a visual treat. Transport: Pickup at Shang Sumdo for the drive back to Leh. Overnight: Hotel in Leh
